A carbon neutral website is where the entire site (including development and hosting) has a neutral impact on the environment. Obviously it's impossible to create or host a website without using computers and servers, so we need to neutralise their impact by planting trees.
Digerati have developed a comprehensive calculator to determine the environmental impact of your site development. We determine the carbon footprint by using the time taken by each developer then multiplying by the power usage of the computers, monitors, peripherals and servers used.
Why Plant Trees?
One effective way to combat greenhouse gas emissions is to plant trees. Trees absorb carbon dioxide while they grow and trap it for years to come. On average, over 70 years, six trees planted in Australia will absorb approximately one tonne of CO2 with 80-90% of the absorption occurring within the first 30 years.
Trees also help to combat salinity, reduce soil erosion, clean underground water systems and provide habitat for wildlife.
